Ibiza in August is buzzing with fiestas

In Spain, August is a month full of fiestas. Many villages and cities in the country celebrate their festivities in honour of their patron saints, an ancient custom that comes from the secular rites held to celebrate the harvest. Ibiza is also in the mood for celebrations in August, especially the Festes de la Terra and the fiestas of Sant Bartomeu, that are in the city of Ibiza and in Sant Antoni de Portmany, respectively.

Festes de la Terra

Until 15th August, the city of Ibiza celebrates the Festes de la Terra on account of the local fiestas of Santa María de las Nieves (5th August) and San Ciriaco (8th August), as well as the fiestas hosted by the quarter of Ses Figueretes from 9th to 15th August. Free shows and concerts, folkloric dances, mass meals, tastings, exhibitions and fireworks are some of the countless events and activities organised for the occasion. An excellent opportunity to discover the island’s traditions.

From the many options on the programme for the fiestas, we particularly recommend the impressive firework display at midnight on 8th August, at the end of the old harbour in Ibiza, or the fireworks that mark the end of the fiestas in the quarter of Ses Figueretes on the night of 15th August. Don’t miss the free concerts at the Reina Sofia Park on 5th, 8th and 14th August. If you like Spanish pop music, be sure to go to the concerts given by Coque Maya on the 5th and Antonio Orozco on the 8th. And if urban music is your thing, don’t miss the selection of artists invited to give a concert on Tuesday 14th. You can check all the events planned for the fiestas on this link (programme in Spanish and Catalan).

Fiestas de Sant Bartomeu

Next 24th August, Sant Antoni de Portmany celebrates the local fiestas of St Bartholomew (Sant Bartolomeu), a great day you mustn’t miss, especially at midnight, when its famous fireworks light the bay. The programme includes events over several weeks in August and on 24th August, there will also be musical shows, folkloric dances and the correfocs night parade, where the participants dress up as devils and leap and dance among firecrackers and sparklers. If you like flamenco, we recommend you go to the concert given by Diego el Cigala on 16th August at the Colegio Cervantes, with tickets selling at a fixed price of €20 (www.wegow.com).
